Letter from Mary Darcy seeking information about the Lost Irish Women of Eureka
Dear Member of Eureka Australia,
I am writing as the Vice-President of the Ballarat and District Irish Association. (BDIA) We have recently applied for and received a grant of $14,500 from the Victorian Government as part of their local history grants program.
The Project is titled “The Lost Irish Women of Eureka”. The aims of the project are to
There are several books giving information about women on the goldfields but none focussing specifically on Irish women. Some women have stories recorded while most are mentioned in relation to their role as wife, mother, daughter, or witness of baptism or marriage.
As you are a descendent of people who were at Eureka or on the goldfields at the time, we are wondering if you have any records, diaries, letters, or great stories of your Irish female ancestors that you would be willing to share or have researched further as part of this project. We would be honoured to have a piece of your history contributed.
There will be a small number of profiles produced for the project but BDIA is also interested in recording stories on an ongoing process of keeping the contribution of the Irish alive. If you would like to share any stories through recording them, we would be delighted to hear from you.
I hope you have some gems of Irish storytelling to share!
Thank you for considering our request.
Kind regards,
Mary Darcy

New Eureka Electorate
Eureka Australia Descendants and Supporters, Inc supports the Electoral Boundary Commission’s proposal to name the new Victorian Lower House electorate in the Ballarat region, ‘Eureka’. The name commemorates the district’s link with gold mining and, more importantly, its leading role in the struggle for democratic ideals that tragically led to the famous clash at Eureka on 3 December 1854.
